South Mountain - September
The week before the big Grand Canyon trip I hiked 24 miles on South Mountain with my father-in-law Donnie, one of his friends from work Neal, and my sister-in-law Candice . There was a heat advisory that day so we got an early start. Eventually we ran out of water and called my mother-in-law Donita to come pick us up. We stopped a bit short of our mileage goal but it was 107 degrees! Not the smartest thing I've ever done!
Starting out before the sun

Fat Man's Pass

Donita met us partway so we could refill on water and food and we still ran out!

I can definitely say the heat was getting to us by the last couple miles. We felt really weird and we were acting like it. Donnie kept trying to get Candice and I to stop and turn around for a picture and we just kept on walking and acting silly.

He finally talked us into stopping for a second

At the end of the day we were parched but confidant. We knew if we could make it 24 miles in that kind of heat we could make it across the Grand Canyon in better weather.
